What’s next: Statesman printing shift sparks speculation on prime plot

The Austin American-Statesman’s decision to close its downtown printing facility and shed about 100 jobs opens the possibility that the newspaper could part with one of the most prime pieces of real estate in downtown Austin.

Texas Senate passes bill to establish sales tax holiday for firearms

Add firearms and ammunition to the list of items the Texas Senate wants to include in a sales tax holiday, with the passage on Thursday of a bill sponsored by Sen. Brandon Creighton.
While the House is soundly behind its proposal to provide a permanent sales tax cut, the Senate continues to tinker with sales tax holidays. As expected, the Austin Country Club has given its blessing to host the World Golf Championship Match Play Tournament for four years starting in 2016, reports the Austin American-Statesman.
The event is coming to the area as a result of a recently announced sponsorship deal with Dell Inc., also for four years.
The Austin Country Club has course yardage of 6,625 yards, and a USGA course rating of 75.2, according to data collected by the Austin Business Journal.

Texas lawmaker gathers support to repeal health insurance fee

The Texas Association of Health Plans is one of the biggest fans of a resolution presented to a House committee Thursday that supports federal actions to repeal a health insurance fee included in the Affordable Care Act.

Falling home prices in Austin? More likely than you think, says analyst

Arch|MI, a company that assesses risks for lenders, estimates there is a 32 percent chance that home prices in Austin will fall in the next two years. The local data is part of its Spring 2015 national report “The Housing & Mortgage Market Review".

Statesman to shutter Austin printing operation; workers face layoffs

The Austin American-Statesman will move its printing and packaging operations to facilities in San Antonio and Houston as part of a new agreement with Hearst Corp. Newspapers, the companies announced Thursday.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Roughly 100 workers will be laid off as a result of the decision.
