Uber, Lyft flood Prop. 1 campaign with cash

Uber Technologies Inc. and Lyft Inc. are pumping money into the Proposition 1 campaign as they try to change Austin’s rules for transportation network companies.
The political action committee heavily backed by those companies has massively out-raised and outspent its competitors, according tp campaign finance documents filed Friday with City Hall.

Amazing.com cuts half of workforce

Business education website operator Amazing Academy LLC has laid off 24 of its 46 workers ­— but not its chef, former employees said Friday.
The Austin company that operates as Amazing.com notified workers via email on Monday that their jobs ended immediately and they would receive 14 days severance pay. The job cuts were made via email and done when CEO and co-founder Matt Clark was not in the office that’s in its downtown Austin, employees said.

Austin weighs $620M Expo Center upgrade

City and county officials are weighing an extensive renovation of the Travis County Exposition Center that could cost up to $620 million, according to a new report. The money would have to come from a Travis County bond election.

Here’s the next city to get a 365 by Whole Foods store

Whole Foods Market Inc. announced this week that the second 365 by Whole Foods Market store in the nation will open July 14 in Lake Oswego, Oregon, south of Portland.

Austin Chamber throws weight behind ride-hailing companies

The Austin Chamber of Commerce has endorsed Proposition 1.
The Chamber’s board of directors has unanimously approved a resolution in support of the proposition, the organization said in an announcement Friday. Prop 1 is the focus of a May 7 voter referendum that will decide the future of regulations for such transportation network companies as Uber Technologies Inc. and Lyft Inc.

Husch Blackwell acquires Wisconsin law firm

Husch Blackwell LLP, which has a large Austin office, is acquiring Milwaukee, Wisconsin law firm Whyte Hirschboeck Dudek SC.
The two firms, which focus on business and litigation law, will merge on July 1, and continue to operate in all markets where both firms have offices. AMD sells majority stakes in Asian operations for $371M

Advanced Micro Devices Inc. has sold majority stakes in two of its Asian operations in a deal worth more than $371 million.
